Shopping Centre Retrofit - Lethbridge Park

Stakeholder: Housing NSW

The shops area was re-designed so that there are shop fronts facing both the front and back of the area.

This was to utilise space and increase natural surveillance. Ideas for shops to be implementedwere a cafe/baker and a community internet acility for the residence to access internet and improve their computer skills.

Predominant issues the proposal targets through increased natural surveillance are:

  • Break & Enter
  • Robbery
  • Violence
  • Assault
  • Vandalism
  • This proposal focusses on reconfiguration of shopping hub area by adding:

  • New Lighting design
  • Implementation of Seating & Shading structures
  • Introduction of wider pedestrian paved cafĂ© area
  • New front and activities for the Salvation Army
  • The lighting and shade structure which were developed were made to be tall durable structure that can be use individually or together to create a variety of shapes.

The features of the lighting design include the light which is secured in the post to protect it from vandalism. The lighting illuminates the roof of the shade structure providing adequate light for safety at night.

The seating and shading design which was previously mentioned is also used in the spaces around these areas to create more inviting and usable space.

The walk ways were altered to make more direct routes to shops and around the area. The implementation of graphics and colours is used to define walkways and illustrate defined areas for walking/pedestrian usage, bicycle riding and car usage in the shared zones.

The spaces to the front and side of the shops aim to provide adequate seating and shade throughout the day and lighting for safety purposes at night.
