DOC applies a ‘Design Thinking’ approach to find solutions to problems that have proved impossible to solve. DOC uses design research methods to explore problems and obtain an in-depth understanding of factors contributing to crime in specific problem situations.

There are a number of ways DOC works with industry. We are dynamic and flexible, the following collaboration options are presented to give a taste of what services we can provide.

COMMISSIONED DESIGN & RESEARCH CONSULTANCIES

DOC undertakes commissioned design and research consultancies. DOC provides product, system, and environmental design services. We have a growing portfolio of custom design products, systems, and environmental design advice.

DOC also provides research consultancies. Using a multidisciplinary approach and deploying cutting edge design research methodologies, DOC can be commissioned to conduct rigorous research.

INDUSTRY SPONSORED RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

At DOC our vision is to be a world leading research centre. DOC aims to be a catalyst in collaborative research and a preferred research partner for industry, business, government and the professions.

DOC has a cross-disciplinary approach involving all areas of design, architecture, urban planning as well as psychology, criminology, and social sciences approaches.

DOC has a research scholarship program that seeks to provide practical innovation to our industry partners.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: (MAs & PhDs)

DOC is seeking expressions of interest from students considering enrolling in a research degree at UTS.

DOC’s current research briefs involve:

  • Design for the improvement of public housing estates with a strength-based community development approach
  • Design that supports Sydney’s late night economies and contributes to improving the vibrancy and safety of Sydney’s night life
  • Design for the development of future technologies for crime prevention
  • The opportunity also exists for successful applicants to potentially undertake casual paid work as a research assistant with our consultancy work, or as a tutor in our popular winter school program.
